![]() ![]() Law and Order is getting yet another spin-off.ĭeadline is reporting that Michael Rapaport, an actor I don't think I've seen in anything in a very long time, will star in a TV series about the "rise, fall and subsequent rise of famous shoe designer and entrepreneur Steve Madden." Madden "took his company, which makes ?his eponymous shoe brand, from the fledgling startup he founded thirty years ago with a mere $1,100 to a global juggernaut," but also ended up with a "criminal conviction and a prison sentence after his financial affairs got entangled with the brokerage house Stratton Oakmont, co-founded by Madden's childhood friend Danny Porush." Part of this story was actually covered in the Martin Scorsese movie The Wolf of Wall Street.Emily in Paris season 2 is now in production.Grace Gummer joins the Let the Right One In TV series. ![]()

![]() ![]() It sounds like a very traditional set of themes, but to me the novel is more prescient and urgent now than ever. Tested on all sides by what is deemed socially, culturally and academically permissible. ![]() Whether or not self-expression is possible and tolerable is explored. ![]() (Each character is defined and luminescent the cast, a constellation never seen before – at least not by this reader.) Despite an omniscient, unobtrusive, non-judgmental narrator, we see the characters both from the outside-in and the inside-out – their exterior versus interior realities, grappling with authenticity. Through the plot alone, she recreates Forster’s range of character, social sense, wit, wisdom and colour, and adds to this the wholly felt, inhabited, involved characters of Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary. Zadie Smith pays homage to Howard’s End in her Orange Prize-winning novel, On Beauty, by borrowing Forster’s structural scaffolding. I feel pride in the achievement, but cannot love it.’ Very elaborate and all pervading plot that is seldom tiresome or forced, range of characters, social sense, wit, wisdom, colour.’ But then, he added: ‘Have only just discovered why I don’t care for it: not a single character in it for whom I care. ![]() The author conceded: ‘ is my best novel and approaching a good novel. Forster’s Howard’s End has been ranked as among the 100 best English-language novels of the twentieth century. ![]() ![]() ![]() At the age of 90 years, he is still teaching and practicing yoga by travelling all around the world. She was so harshly judged and treated because of a physical deformity she had no control over. The scenes where she compares her twisted form to the body of her lovers broke my heart. ![]() To all intents and purposes she has no freedom, her cage may be gilded but it is still a prison and her every move is dictated. What made this book for me, and made me cry, was Veronica. It's not a style I personally care for but I can understand the argument of needing to make it realistic to the time setting. I can understand why the author did that, even though this is a steam-punk version of the early 1900's. It took me a while to get into the style of writing, which was done to reflect the time period. I'm not sure I totally believe that she went so quickly from an obedient and unquestioning girl to a devious and manipulative one, but I totally loved her 'I don't give a damn' attitude. Chance happenings lead to both a sexual awakening and a determination to take control of her own life. ![]() Unkind words and actions have left Veronica with a deep seated sense of self-loathing and a lack of knowledge of life and the world around her. For the sheer depth of emotion and the strength of the heroine I'm settling on 3.5 stars. At different times through this book I could have rated it anywhere from 2 to 5 stars. ![]() ![]() ![]() In a photo of the production housed at the British Library, Krauss’s Shylock is plump and well-clothed, a cruel joke given that at the same moment he was captured, most of Europe’s living Jews were emaciated and freezing. ![]() In the latter year, when the Nazis banned work by playwrights from the Reich’s enemy nations, Shakespeare was the sole playwright to escape the ban, although some of his plays - “Othello,” for instance - were included in it. According to a 1993 New York Times article by the theater critic John Gross, the Nazis staged “The Merchant of Venice” 20 times in 1933, and a subsequent 30 times between 19. The Burg production is widely seen as the culminating event of what had been, for the Third Reich, a propagandistic obsession. In May 1943, at Vienna’s Burg theater, the Nazi party staged its most famous production of Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice.” It starred Werner Krauss, a man so anti-Semitic that he is said to have asked Joseph Goebbels to make a public announcement clarifying that he was not Jewish, but rather habitually played Jewish caricatures as a form of civic service. ![]() ![]() The active, engaging stories have appealing plots and lovable characters, encouraging children to continue their reading journey.
